A TAM plane crashed last night in Sao Paulo, Brazil killing at least 200 people. It seems like the airline pilot tried to abort a crash landing by trying to take off again.
Recovery workers searched for bodies, they have found 158 and have identified 8. The TAM Airline Airbus A320 was attempting to land in a driving rainstorm at Sao Paulo’s Congonhas airport. The plane flew by a multilane highway and then slammed into a building and bursting into flames.
“What appears to have happened is that the pilot didn’t manage to land and he tried to take off again,” said Capt. Marcos, the spokesperson for the fire department.
The building that the plane hit was a concrete structure that now looks blown out, with smoke coming out of everywhere.
TAM Airlines have released a list of people on and the plane and also the workers who were killed on the ground. There were 186 people on board. 158 bodies have been recovered. Family members are staying at a near by hotel and are being taken care of by the airline.
Witnesses say they saw the plane skid across the Avenida Washington Luis, a highway next to the airport, before hitting the building that served as a depot for the same airline. Officials have ruled out the chance of anybody surviving the crash and say that it has been very difficult to recover the bodies because of the massive destruction.
Investigators will look into whether the airport rushed to reopen their runways after being resurfaced recently and being closed for several weeks. The U.S National Transportation Safety Board will assist in the investigation.
Sao Paulo’s Congonhas airport is known for having short, slippery runways. They were recently resurfaced and the cutting of grooves to channel rainwater off the pavement had not been completed.
Monday, a small plane skidded off the runway at that same airport, which is mainly designed to handle short commuter flights.
Last February a court banned large jets to land at that airport because of safety concerns. “This is not an airport out on the edge of the city. This is right in the city,” said Tom Hennigan, a reporter for The Times of London.
This incident has been the deadliest air disaster in the history of Brazil. The President Incaio Lula da Silva has declared three days of national mourning.
This crash and the one from less than a year ago, where an Embraer Legacy 600 jet and a Gol Airlines Boing 737 were in a mid air collision that killed 154 people have set off a widespread about the country’s air traffic control system.
