The White House has turned its attention to preventing malaria one of the biggest killers of African Kids. It all happened Wednesday where President Bush joined the African dancers entertaining at the Rose Garden event. Bush pounded on the drums and danced with the troupe.
Laura Bush also attended The Rose Garden event. It was the first time The White House marked Malaria Awareness Day. “On this special day, we renew our commitment to lead the world toward an urgent goal, and that is to turn the tide against malaria in Africa, and around the globe,” the president said.
The president also said that the disease is preventable and curable. He said that defeating malaria will be a challenge but will not require a miracle. They will be distributing 500,000 bed nets to the most vulnerable households in Zambia. Uganda will also be receiving 500,000 bed nets. This campaign will distribute a total of near 1.4 million nets to children under 5. They will also get polio vaccines.
Bush said: “The United States will lead, and we expect others to follow side-by-side”
The entertainment for the day was KanKouran West African Dance Company. The president and first lady joined the dancers on stage to take some photos but a few minutes later the president was trying to dance and started pounding on the drums.
