The most popular talent show in the US American Idol raised more than $30 million Wednesday for people in Africa and the US. American Idol had a special two hour show Wednesday filled with inspirational songs, movie, television and music stars. The night also included stories of poverty from Africa and the United States.
Bono, the lead singer for U2 said “People say you can’t be the generation that ends brutal, stupid poverty, but we can and we will.” Bono is also the lead spokesman for the ONE Campaign, which is trying to make poverty history. He also said that the feeling of standing in front of 70,000 people in LA was pretty amazing, and couldn’t think of any other feeling better than it except the feeling of saving somebody’s live.
The show was closed by the six idol contestants singing a song written by Bono and Dave Stewart a few years back about the AIDS emergency in Africa called “American Prayer”
This week the contestants received 70 million votes, which is a new record and almost double of last week’s voting. None of the remaining contestants was voted off, however two contestants will be going home. The votes from this week and next weeks’ will be added and the two contestants with the lowest votes will leave American Idol, leaving only 4 contestants to become the next American Idol.
Ford, Coca-Cola and AT&T made an undisclosed donation for each vote cast by viewers via text message and telephone. When the vote tally hit 50 million, News Corp. which owns Fox TV donated $5 million.
Last Night’s show was co-hosted by Ellen DeGeneres who was at the Disney Hall in LA for musical performances by stars like Kelly Clarkson, Annie Lennox and group II Divo. Ellen DeGeneres donates $100,000.
The once cheesy summer talent contest has become the nation’s most watched TV show and a cultural phenomenon by raising more than $30 million for young people in Africa and US.

My thoughts
It is so nice of them to do this for people that need it. But Africa is not the only poor country there are many other countries around the world that also need help I guess you start with one and then you jump to the other one. Why don’t you start with me? I am very poor! If the show is called American Idol Gives Back, can you give us Sanjaya back?
